The 'Institute of Snow Research' is an attempt to enliven snow through exploring its vivid qualities. The imaginary Institute uses the aesthetics of scientific research to explore the agencies of the seemingly inanimate substance in order to reveal its relationship to us and vice versa. In four experiments the project approaches the question, how we can empathize with what is widely understood as 'nonliving'.

Denotation: SNOW RESCUE

Time Period: March 2021

Description:

Snow is increasingly mistreated in the shared habitat of humans, animals, and non-living. It is most commonly taken out of its naturally preferred surrounding and collected in disgraceful waste fields. The aim of the Institute for Snow Research is to provide this marginalized entity a refuge in the suburbian area of Vuosaari. Here it is protected from mistreatment and discrimination

Time Period: March 2021

Description:

Sounds made by walking on snow under various climate conditions have been recorded and archived in order to compare the acustic properties of snow in the specific realtionship between the human walker and the snow.
